Permanent Residence Guide

What qualifies you for permanent residence in Kenya, and how to apply.

Written for: Long-term residents, their families, and employers supporting senior staff in Kenya.

What this covers

Permanent residence changes an individual's relationship with Kenya: it removes the renewal cycle, decouples status from a single employer, and provides a stable footing for family life and long-term planning. It is also materially harder to obtain than a work permit, and the qualifying routes are narrower than most applicants expect.

This guide sets out who can realistically pursue permanent residence, the categories available, and what each requires in terms of qualifying period, evidence and continuity of lawful status. It is explicit about the parts that commonly derail applications — gaps in permit history, time spent outside the country, and documentation that was adequate for a permit renewal but falls short at this level.

It also covers what permanent residence does and does not confer, how dependants are treated, and how the route interacts with citizenship for those considering it as a later step. Where processing is outside anyone's control, we say so rather than offering a timeline we cannot stand behind.
